Michael Anderson
Michael is a Solicitor in both our Commercial and IP and Dispute Resolution teams.
He joined LBMW as a trainee solicitor in September 2019 before qualifying as a Solicitor in 2021. He spends much of his time advising on non-contentious commercial or corporate agreements, property and charity litigation and IP law and trademark oppositions.
Experience
Michael often advises clients on non-contentious work including commercial contracts and agreements, corporate structures and shareholder matters. He also advises corporate bodies on data protection and GDPR issues as well as educational law, governance and other general commercial issues.
He advises employees and employers on many issues relating to employment law. This includes advice on settlement agreements in connection with employment disputes including personal injury and discrimination claims, non-contentious TUPE advice and general employment advice.
He advises several international clients on the protection of Protected Designations of Origin and Protected Geographical Indications in the wine, spirits and food sectors. Michael has experience in trademark opposition proceedings in the UK IPO relating to the protection of geographical indications including Champagne, Cognac and others.
Michael also deals with a variety of disputes ranging from disputes between landlords and tenants, commercial and contractual disputes between companies, shareholders disputes including unfair prejudice claims, charity litigation, trust disputes and contested probate as well as defamation claims. Michael is used to issuing proceedings in the County Court, High Court and is also acting in a dispute which will be heard in the Court of Appeal later this year.
His clients are varied and include companies, trusts, charities, public bodies and individuals.
Michael has experience in clergy discipline work and has represented clients in tribunals and also in the Court of Arches, the ecclesiastical court’s court of appeal.
Experience
Michael qualified as a solicitor in 2021. Some of his career highlights to date include:
- Successfully opposing a trademark application by arguing that the mark applied for was a combination of two protected names which evoked both protected names. This included successfully arguing that two protected names cannot be evoked simultaneously.
- Acting for a large charity in an employment dispute which involved claims of whistleblowing and unfair dismissal and reaching a settlement with the other side, avoiding the cost of a 10 day hearing and negative press attention.
- Acting in an Unfair Prejudice trial in the High Court in a claim worth several hundreds of thousands of pounds.
- Acting in a Charity dispute in relation to a piece of land which has developmental potential worth several millions of pounds, including preparing for a 10 day trial.
- Winning a dispute between a Landlord and Tenant, securing a payment of damages and costs for the client Landlord.
- Attending a mediation and resolving a long-running dispute in relation to an Estate.
Career to date
Michael studied History at the University of Leeds and graduated in 2015. He went on to complete his GDL and LPC at BPP University. Prior to joining LBMW in September 2019, Michael worked as a Paralegal at a pension fund in London.
Michael qualified as a solicitor in September 2021.
