Head of Business Law

Ed is the head of business law at LBMW encompassing the commercial, corporate and employment teams. He is a commercially minded and approachable lawyer who guides clients through complex transactions or difficult personal situations in a clear and calm fashion.

Corporate & Commercial

Leading the Firm's corporate and commercial work, Ed handles mergers & acquisitions, fundraising and refinance, debt and security, corporate advisory, shareholder matters, data and compliance and all types of commercial agreement. His clients include companies, SME's, investors – both international and domestic - start-ups, entrepreneurs, charities and educational organisations. Ed particularly relishes getting involved at the start of a client's business journey and forging long term relationships.

Ed works closely with the IP/IT team particularly in the Firm’s wine and spirits nice sector specialism where he acts for wineries, distributors, commercial agents, investors and sellers. LBMW has been well known for more than 60 years in its brand protection in wines and spirits.

Employment

Ed also leads the employment team which acts for both employers and employees across a wide range of sectors. That practice includes both disputes including tribunal proceedings and settlement negotiations and also advisory – corporate transactions, TUPE and HR support.

Ed has built a significant practice in particularly sensitive employment investigations and disputes. He has acted in very high value and high-profile matters where confidentiality and discretion are essential components. That has included clients at the top of financial organisations, international businessmen, the armed forces, the media, the Church of England and well-known charities and institutions. He is now regularly instructed to act as an independent disciplinary and grievance investigator.

Clergy Discipline and Safeguarding

For more than 15 years, Ed has maintained a specialism in clergy discipline (CDM) work where he is now one of the most experienced practitioners in the country having acted for scores of clergy and having appeared in the Clergy Discipline Tribunal many times He also advises clients on safeguarding in this sector and in education.

Career to date

Ed trained at LBMW, qualifying in 2009 and becoming a partner in 2016. He is the Deputy Registrar to the Bishops of Liverpool and Derby. He is the Firm’s HR and Training partner. He is Secretary to the Pooh Properties Trust.
