Elizabeth Cooper is a London based Private Client lawyer with more than two years of experience representing wealthy individuals and their families for taxation, trust, estate planning, succession planning advice and probate matters.

Elizabeth provides clear, strategic and technically robust advice that helps clients protect their wealth and plan for the future. Elizabeth focuses on estate planning and the preparation of Wills, including inheritance tax structuring, providing tailored solutions designed to meet each client’s personal priorities. Elizabeth also handles the administration of estates, from preparing and submitting applications for Grants of Representations to the Probate Registry to administering the estate and has successfully obtained Grants on Credit from HM Revenue and Customs on a number of occasions and regularly negotiates with District Valuers during compliance checks.

Elizabeth also advises clients on the creation of trust structures, including the settlement of Vulnerable Persons Trusts, together with providing tax planning advice and assists Trustees with the administration and management of trusts. Furthermore, Elizabeth has assisted Trustees with settling historic inheritance tax charges with HM Revenue and Customs and obtaining inheritance tax clearance. Elizabeth has extensive experience preparing and registering Lasting Powers of Attorney for clients with the Office of the Public Guardian. Elizabeth also often provides tax advice and assists with gifts of assets and has advised clients on the structuring of family businesses, including the tax implications of winding up business held in trust.

Recent work includes

  • assisting with a Grant of Probate application and the administration of an estate after our litigation department successfully won a High Court case regarding the overturning of a Will due to lack of mental capacity and undue influence at the time of execution, and this has included negotiating with HM Revenue and Customs’ compliance department due to delay in the administration of estate caused by the litigation case and a judgement being required from the court declaring against the Will
  • advising on the removal of US resident beneficiaries from a Jersey/Hong Kong trust structure
  • negotiating and settling historic inheritance tax charges of a Trust with HM Revenue and Customs, including negotiation of asset valuations with the compliance officer
  • advising on and the preparation of a vulnerable person’s trust to protect assets for the next generation
  • assisting Trustees with the administration and management of Trusts, offering the Trustees practical solutions
  • registering charitable Will Trusts with the Charity Commission and HM Revenues and Customs charitable department
  • advising clients on the tax implications of liquidating corporate family structurers held in trust

Career to date

Elizabeth completed the Graduate Diploma of Law and Legal Practice Course at the University of Law, Bloomsbury, in 2020 and 2021 respectively before joining LBMW as a trainee solicitor in September 2021, completing seats in our Commercial Property, Ecclesiastical, Education and Charities, Litigation and Private Client departments. Elizabeth qualified as a solicitor in our Private Client Department in September 2023.

Elizabeth is an affiliate member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and is currently working towards completing the STEP Diploma and becoming a Full Trust and Estate Practitioner.
