Mike Sweetmore is an education adviser to LBMW. He grew up in Derbyshire before reading Philosophy and Literature at the University of Warwick. He also has a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Liverpool.
Mike had a former incarnation in the Administrative Civil Service before resigning to spend more time on historical and other research and writing.
Mike joined the then Department for Education and Science in 1986, working initially on the Technical and Vocational Education Initiative. He then worked in the areas of Industry Links and City Technology Colleges before spending most of his career working on School Organisation, including the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 and the Education and Inspections Act 2006.
At various times Mike has also had responsibility for policy on rural schools, governance federations, schools with a religious character, and foundation schools.
Between 2010 and retiring from the Department for Education in November 2013, Mike led the team working on school land issues, especially in the context of conversion of maintained schools to Academies. This included leading on Schedule 1 to the Academies Act 2010 and its revision in Schedule 14 to the Education Act 2011.
It is this familiarity with the legislative and practical background in school organisation and land policy that Mike brings to his role as an adviser to LBMW.
