Draft Cathedrals Measure gets approval from the Ecclesiastical Committee

Draft Cathedrals Measure gets approval from the Ecclesiastical Committee

It has now been confirmed that on 23rd February 2021 the Ecclesiastical Committee in Parliament deemed the draft Cathedrals Measure expedient, which means that it is very likely that the measure will receive Royal Assent and come into law in the early part of 2021.

Cathedral chapters and diocesan bishops will now need to be giving consideration to:

  • making changes to the governance of their cathedral;
  • making changes to the constitution and statues to comply with the requirements of the Measure;
  • ensuring that the cathedral chapter is ready to be registered as a charity after the end of the transitional period;
  • ensuring that cathedral property is properly categorised.
